Planter Notes was a newsletter, produced by the Planter Studies Centre, designed to keep academics, genealogists, government agencies, heritage groups and the general public informed on developments in Planter Studies. Planter Notes included announcements of conferences and workshops, answers to research questions and items of interest to readers in the area of Planter research. The publication ran from 1989 until 2002. The Planter Studies Centre supports and promotes research on the 8000 New England Planters who immigrated to Nova Scotia in the 1760s. Once known as the pre-Loyalists, the Planters significantly altered the economy and social institutions of Nova Scotia and were integral to the creation and development of representative democracy in Canada. Acadia University's Esther Clark Wright Archives hold an impressive collection of Planter documents. Among the best-known of the Planter Studies Centre activities are its international conferences. The first four led to the publications of well-received collections of papers edited by Margaret Conrad and Barry Moody: They Planted Well: New England Planters in Maritime Canada (Fredericton: Acadiensis Press, 1988), Making Adjustments: Change and Continuity in Planter Nova Scotia, 1759-1800 (Fredericton: Acadiensis Press, 1991), Intimate Relations: Family and Community in Planter Nova Scotia, 1759-1800 (Fredericton: Acadiensis Press, 1995), and Planter Links: Community and Culture in Colonial Nova Scotia (Fredericton: Acadiensis Press, 2001). The Planter Studies Centre is affiliated with the Department of History and Classics at Acadia University and its activities are overseen by a committee composed of Acadia faculty and staff and representatives of local historical societies.
