These records were created by four generations of women and their families: Mary Elizabeth Black Hutchinson Gourley (1829-1895); Mary's daughter, Elizabeth Hutchinson Bulmer (1850-1931); Elizabeth's daughter, Grace Bulmer Bowers (1889-1977); and Grace's daughter, Phyllis Bowers Sutherland (1926- ). These women lived at least part of their lives in Great Village, Colchester County, NS. The records reflect the personal, business and occupational-professional lives of the creators and their families. All these families were relatives of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Elizabeth Bishop, on her maternal side. As noted by Sandra Barry in Elizabeth Bishop: An Archival Guide to Her Life in Nova Scotia, p. 66: "One of the fonds most valuable aspects is its elaboration of a context in which to view the early growth and development of Elizabeth Bishop, chart her relationships with maternal family members, and assess not only the continuing influence of her maternal family (in particular, her mother) on her life and work, but also of her lingering presence in the collective memory long after her death."
