Wolfville Businessmen Win the Battle at the Rink
This photo shows the players who took part in a hockey game in Wolfville in 1921. Wolfville businessmen formed one team, staff at Acadia formed the other. Men taking part included Fred Eagles, Artie Young, Brighton Fielding, Bill Harris, Ted Stackhouse, and Avery deWitt. The town beat the university in convincing fashion, 6-2. Acadia’s student publication described the game: “The evening of February 16, 1921, is one that the students of Acadia will not soon forget. For on that evening were we not treated to the spectacle of certain staid and dignified members of the faculty doing battle royal with the business men of the town of Wolfville? Said battle took the form of a friendly (?) hockey match at the Evangeline Rink. Despite the brilliant (and otherwise) suggestions and words of encouragement of the students, the result was disastrous for the Faculty team. This battle at times waxed hot and furious, but fortunately the scores of stretcher-bearers were not needed. The game, which was witnessed by about eight hundred spectators, marked the beginning of Acadia’s Million Dollar Campaign.”
