Bessie Lockhart (1890-1985) graduated from Acadia University in 1916. At Acadia she was close friends with fellow students Esther Clark (Wright), Hettie Chute, and Lillian Chase, living together in Seminary and Whitman Hall (Tully). They remained friends right up until their deaths. Esther Clark Wright wrote about Lockhart: "slim, dark, vivacious, interested in people, eager to get the most out of collage... (she) was easily the most popular and quickly became one of the leading members of the Class of 1916". In the fall of 1916, she left for India as a missionary under the auspices of the United Baptist Women's Missionary Union and the Canadian Baptist Foreign Mission Board.
